Hancom Science Based Targets
Hancom AS (Hancom) recognizes the urgency of taking climate action, and in response to a customer request developed a greenhouse gas account in line with Greenhouse Gas Protocol guidance and a near-term emissions reduction target in 2023, with 2022 as a base year.
In 2024 Hancom AS’s near-term emissions reduction target was approved by the Science Based Target initiative using the program for small and medium sized enterprises. The target is as follows:
Hancom AS commits to reduce scope 1 and scope 2 GHG emissions by 42% by 2030 from a 2022 base year, and to measure and reduce its scope 3 emissions.
A 42% reduction of Hancom scope 1 and 2 emissions is equivalent to an absolute reduction of 276,8 tCO2e. In line with SBTi requirements, this target includes all seven greenhouse gases covered by the Kyoto Protocol as well as biogenic CO2 emissions from the consumption of biofuels. Hancom uses the location-based method to calculate Scope 2 emissions, and the target covers 100% of Hancom emission and activities in Scope 1 and 2.
Hancom AS is currently working on developing a more complete overview of the company’s scope 3 emissions. These emissions are calculated using a spend method and are included in the table 2 below (emissions inventory). It is assumed that this data is quite inaccurate, but the quality should be reasonably consistent from year to year.

In 2024, Hancom emitted 522,0 tCO2e in Scope 1 and 2, and 5,2 tCO2 from direct consumption of biogenic fuels. This is a decrease from the base year of 2022 by 119,3 tCO2e and a decrease from 2023 by 145,8 tCO2e, caused mainly by replacing diesel vehicles with electric vehicles. Another significant cause is that the share of biodiesel in diesel and bioethanol in petrol increases year-on-year.
